Unorthodox Methods for Musicians

Do any of you viewers use an unorthodox method of making music? Or do you at least know of these methods? I always thought that was the most creative and limitless way to make music, though I’m not particularly amazing at it myself, I do try every now and then. What I am referring to is Chiptune. Not only Chiptune however, but anything else. My good friend, ‘Meteorologist’ for example, composed an entire album using nothing but samples taken from cassette tapes, and it actually sounded pretty decent. Of course, there are also things such as sequencers/trackers that can be used on a PC, or trackers on retro game systems, like the original Game Boy, or a Commodore 64.

When I was first introduced to the genre of Chiptune, I was speechless. It’s just such an awesome way to make music, and can be combined with almost any genre out there if done right. Various examples of Chiptune artists (and also my favorites) include Anamanaguchi, Maru, Phlogiston, 8 Bit Weapon, Meteorologist (heh, hi Jeff), SabrePulse, Swampyboy, etc. I’ve also heard that Beck used elements of Chiptune in his music, but I’m not much of a listener of Beck, so I can’t confirm it. But yeah, I have made a couple of songs using the sequencer known as LSDJ on my DMG-01 Game Boy and it is definitely a fun time, and also kind of a twist for my music, as it’s something that not many would expect me to make. Buy a USB LSDJ cartridge and a DMG-01 for about 60 or 70 dollars, and you’ve got yourself a new instrument. There are also things such as Nano Loop, Nitro Tracker, and even ways of manipulating sound from a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. I just happen to use LSDJ. Some even go as far to use a modded Super Game Boy for the SNES, and that is actually quite an awesome idea. Here are a couple of pictures below. Read the rest of this entry »

Chris Pirillo Community?..REALLY?

Edit from KD0JEJ: I’ve seen Chris do podcast/vids when someone pisses him off. If he chooses that route for this issue, it will be CLEAR that he’s taken a juvenile approach to the matter… I will ensure I have good site backups for the next few weeks. All members that are signed up and in good standing will be notified of a new URL in the event of a DDoS. I’ve called my webhost up to give a heads up to be on watch.
Edit 2 from KD0JEJ: Nice try.
Edit 3 from KD0JEJ: I see that Chris’s Community Manager took the time to respond.  It’s in the Comments, along with my response to Wrath’s response. They said something interesting that gave me an idea.

So, I was hanging around at http://live.pirillo.com last night, just like I always do when I get bored. I’ve been a Pirillo fan for quite some time. He’s an interesting guy, he makes videos about some pretty interesting things, and he’s always very insightful and shows the latest cool gadgets, apps, etc on the web. He was recording videos, and basically the rule is when he is recording videos, users in the live chat must stay on topic, and behave. No spamming, talking about unrelated things, that sort of thing. Well, that’s all fine and dandy, but something happened that makes me question Lockergnome as a community.

Aims

Aims. Aims are a good thing to have, but whether you have the motivation to achieve your aims, is the problem. Motivation is a rare thing in your standard person, if we’re honest, we can say that probably over 50% of people are very lazy. If you’re like me, you say you really want to do something – but never get around to doing it. I’ve got some aims for my life, and this year, that I’d love to achieve, but then as I said, whether I have the motivation to try and get these aims, is a different matter. There are things that can motivate us to achieve them, such as chocolate, coffee, people motivating us, telling us that we’re doing well and that we shouldn’t give up on life and people and go to our lonely computer desk for the rest of our teenage years, etc.

Famous people such as Hitler had aims, his aims not being the best of all aims… But, he achieved his aims (even if it was for the worse…) So, my aims for 2010 are: Read the rest of this entry »

Nostalgia

collage

Do you remember “the golden days”, “the Clinton years”, etc? Well, not just the Clinton years, but from the 90s and below? What I’m getting at here, is the time when thing seemed to have quite a bit more soul than they do now. Advertising, gaming, movies, TV, events, even technology. I miss those days.

What is the definition of courage?

So, another rant on the strange friendship I have with my two best friends and sisters. Couple days ago, we got together with another friend of mine. Long story short, the same drama as before started up, in greater volume, and in front of a few people I would have rather not have witnessed the event. And I don’t take to public humiliation well, really. I guess that night was the breaking point for me. When I got home, I did my bitch-and-moan special to Viral and Wrath, then I got busy writing a very bitchy email to the two of them. It basically ranted about how I wasn’t going to take their shit, how it hurt, and how I basically told them to back the **** off.

…I then act like a coward for their last day in town and hide under the radar again like I usually do. This time though, I’m waiting for shit to start up. If anything, I expected them to be on the defensive like, “We’re just looking out for you as friends,” blah blah, insert defense here.

Game Genie?!

Nah, just yanking you. I’m not really a genie. But I am a gamer that loves and plays many different games. I am a friend of Dustin that was introduced to DigiMantis. I would love to do game designing, but right now I do two other things that I love as well. Graphic designing (Photoshop CS4, you rock) and video game journalism. I am hoping to get my own foot in the industry in the future by either joining Blizzard as a GM for WoW (a job for which I landed an interview but didn’t get to go) and/or land a job as a video game journalist for a respectable magazine such as Game Informer.

Well here I am, your neighborhood friendly video game person who will be bringing you reviews and previews into the coolest games and and their gadgets on the market. =3 Stay tuned soon for my first, and hopefully impressionable, article on the entire series of the Final Fantasy games up until now, a special tribute to Final Fantasy in honor of the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII. I look forward to hopefully being a part of you guys and contributing stuff that you will like. Until next time!
